Moderation in All Things?
How many of us have used the term, “moderation in all things” to turn our vices into virtues? Is smoking in moderation good? Or snorting cocaine? How about just moderately abusing our kids? On the other hand, would you brag about being only moderately honest? or trust-worthy? Heaven forbid we could be trusted all the time! Why are They Mad at Me?
Every time we make a positive change in our lives, we are apt to get mixed reactions from our friends and families. It feels great when we get an “atta-boy” or “atta-girl” from the people we love, but strangely enough, some people actually get angry with us! This leaves us feeling confused, bewildered, hurt, and sometimes makes us question if we are making the right decision after all. Escaping the Mythological Monster
When I was 25, I had a friend in her early 30’s. She warned me, “When you hit 30, you start falling apart.”
A Different Path
I’ve been in people’s homes where they have bottles and bottles of pharmaceuticals all over their counters and tables. After a trip to a doctor, it usually results in another prescription added to the clutter. Most of these pills treat symptoms, such as pain, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar. Many of these pills will be taken for the rest of their lives because the cause of the problem is never corrected so the medical solution is to keep treating the symptoms. Embrace Our Freedoms
Occasionally I hear someone say, “I don’t want to be vegan or vegetarian because I want to have the freedom to eat whatever I want.” Let’s take a look at this freedom from another perspective. What's Not Wrong?
_ As we head into the holidays, and then the new year, many of us want to focus on creating a better life for ourselves and others. One way to do this is by shifting our perspective, and one quick way to do that is by asking, “What’s NOT wrong?”
Can I Honor My Past and Still be a Vegan?
Everyone I know, including myself, grew up eating meat. Some of us lived on farms, some of us grew up eating moose or other wild game, and some of us still live in families involved with animal agriculture, hunting or fishing. Most of us probably have fond memories of family traditions centered around food, such as turkey for Thanks-giving, ham for Easter, chicken for Sunday dinners and steak on the barbecue grill. |
