Every month in the Alaska Vegetarian Society Newsletter,
Delisa Renideo provides an insightful look into some aspect
of eating a plant-based diet. She strives to provide an in-depth
perspective, helping us to gain more clarity and hopefully
to support positive changes in our lives.

                                    The Joyful Vegan

I get comments and questions quite often from non-vegans something to the effect: “It must be hard to be vegan. I could never do that! I enjoy eating too much.”  I think many people think it is a constant battle of will to take on the “serious” business of eating a plant-based diet. If I then admit that indeed, I also do not smoke or drink, they are convinced that I truly do not have any fun.

The Courage to Take a Different Road
For most of us, choosing to eat a plant-based diet is definitely taking the road less travelled.  When mainstream America, our co-workers, family and friends are still eating the Standard American Diet, it takes courage to choose a different road.

The Power to Change Your Past

_    We all know we can change our future, right?  But did you know we can also change our past?  Hang in there with me and you’ll see what I mean.
The power to choose is a tremendous power. We can only make choices in this present moment, but the choices we make now can change both our future and our past.

                                    Vegan for Our Values

_    People often ask me why I choose to be vegan. The simple answer is: for my values. It is the one simple choice I can make that has more far-reaching positive effects on things I care about than anything else I can do.
But this isn’t just about my values. Almost everyone I know wants most of the same things.

                                    Moderation in All Things?
How many of us have used the term, “moderation in all things” to turn our vices into virtues? Is smoking in moderation good?  Or snorting cocaine? How about just moderately abusing our kids? On the other hand, would you brag about being only moderately honest? or trust-worthy? Heaven forbid we could be trusted all the time!

Why are They Mad at Me?
Every time we make a positive change in our lives, we are apt to get mixed reactions from our friends and families.  It feels great when we get an “atta-boy” or “atta-girl” from the people we love, but strangely enough, some people actually get angry with us! This leaves us feeling confused, bewildered, hurt, and sometimes makes us question if we are making the right decision after all.

                                    Escaping the Mythological Monster

When I was 25, I had a friend in her early 30’s. She warned me, “When you hit 30, you start falling apart.”

                                    A Different Path
I’ve been in people’s homes where they have bottles and bottles of pharmaceuticals all over their counters and tables.  After a trip to a doctor, it usually results in another prescription added to the clutter. Most of these pills treat symptoms, such as pain, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar.  Many of these pills will be taken for the rest of their lives because the cause of the problem is never corrected so the medical solution is to keep treating the symptoms.

                                    Embrace Our Freedoms
Occasionally I hear someone say, “I don’t want to be vegan or vegetarian because I want to have the freedom to eat whatever I want.”  Let’s take a look at this freedom from another perspective.

                                    What's Not Wrong?

_    As we head into the holidays, and then the new year, many of us want to focus on creating a better life for ourselves and others. One way to do this is by shifting our perspective, and one quick way to do that is by asking, “What’s NOT wrong?”

Can I Honor My Past and Still be a Vegan?
Everyone I know, including myself, grew up eating meat. Some of us lived on farms, some of us grew up eating moose or other wild game, and some of us still live in families involved with animal agriculture, hunting or fishing. Most of us probably have fond memories of family traditions centered around food, such as turkey for Thanks-giving, ham for Easter, chicken for Sunday dinners and steak on the barbecue grill.

Why It's Normal to Be Sick, Fat and Tired
If you put sugar in the gas tank of your car, would you expect it to run?  Of course not!  It would be normal for your car not to run with sugar in the gas!  If you gave your preschoolers matches and knives to play with, it would be normal for them to hurt themselves and possibly burn down your house.  In the same way, it is normal for us to be sick, fat, and tired when we consume far more calories than we burn and the majority of our calories come from white sugar, white flour, and oils.

Help! I'm Vegan, but Can't Seem to Lose Weight!
We vegans often pride ourselves on being “able to eat as much as we want without gaining weight,” but if this were totally true, would there be any overweight vegans? Is there a catch somewhere?

                                    What If?
What if our bodies are designed really well and are supposed to be healthy?
What if we have built in trouble-shooting features that find problems and solve them automatically?
What if these features work best when we eat the foods we were designed to eat?
We may answer these questions one way with our heads, but our behaviors often say the opposite.

                                    Saying "YES" to Life
Life.  We’re born with it. We’re born into it.  Yet we rarely give it much thought -- until some kind of life-threatening experience threatens to take it from us. But if we think about it now -- before we reach an obvious precipice -- we can have a far grander experience of life.  And in this process, we’ll discover how much power we have to CHOOSE a life of health, love, creativity, and joy beyond what we have imagined possible.

                                    The Ultimate Act of Intimacy
Don’t worry, this isn’t an x-rated article! But it is about intimacy in a form we all engage in daily.
What is this most intimate act? Eating!
                                        What’s so intimate about eating?
When we eat, we put a substance into our mouth which then actually becomes us.  Our food literally becomes part of us, merging in its totality with us. What could be more intimate than that?

Eating in the Age of Nature

_    Have    you heard of The Age of Nature? Neither had I, until I attended the Bioneer’s Conference in Anchorage last week.    However, as soon as I heard this term, it resonated within me and I knew I needed to explore it more deeply.

                                    Help! I Can't Keep Up!
Have you noticed that things are changing?  And that they are changing faster and faster all the time?
